Graig Fatha Monthly Updates
On this blog, you’ll find all Graig Fatha Wind Farm news.
Timeline
2025
FEB
Following a record-breaking month of generation in December, it was another strong month of generation for Graig Fatha Wind Farm in January. Here are the key stats for the month:
-
Generation: 445MWh
-
Carbon Savings: 236 Tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided
-
Bill savings: members saved a total of over £14,000 on their electricity bills
JAN
Graig Fatha members saw a record-breaking month of generation during December 2024, as the wind turbine generated a massive 877MWh. That’s the second-highest monthly generation to date!
While 900 members own Graig Fatha and receive savings on their energy bills, the Welsh Government also provided £1.1M to support the project.
Check out the total generation stats!
The direct income generated by the Welsh Government’s portion goes to two charities, the Fuel Bank Foundation and RCT Interlink. Since the wind farm began producing power in early 2022, more than £700k has been raised and is being distributed.
2024
NOV
Another windy month of generation for Graig Fatha members this month with over £14.5K of energy bill savings and 405MWh generated – saving the carbon equivalent of 3,308 flights to Paris!
In other news, we welcomed Matt Cole, CEO of the Fuel Bank Foundation to Graig Fatha – so he could stand before the very source of the energy generation that has directly helped with fuel poverty through the Welsh Government’s contributions to the charity.
Read about the Fuel Bank Foundation and see what Matt had to say here.

In other news, sadly the cost of living crisis is still having a very significant impact on a large proportion of households in the UK, and fuel poverty remains equally prevalent. The Fuel Bank Foundation’s (FBF) 2024 Report sets out some of the statistics for this issue, the impacts for individuals, and what FBF are doing to help. While there are some hard messages in there, it is good to know that Graig Fatha is contributing so much to help those in fuel crisis.
AUG
Following the AGM in July, Ian Capewell and Karin Haverson have been appointed as the new Coop Board members, with Luke Clarke and Camilla Kidner standing down. The turbine continues to operate well, with generation between the P50 and P75 estimates (being those with a 50% and 75% probability of being exceeded).
A specialist team was on site on Tuesday to do blade inspections. These inspections typically happen every 3 years and doing them via rope means they can get really up close and do a more thorough job than would be possible with a drone. The team took these amazing pictures while they were there. You will be pleased to hear that the blades were given a clean bill of health.
A contribution has been made to the Ely Miners’ Welfare Club to enable them to improve their bowling greens and facilities for children’s football, all of which has been very gratefully received. This contribution is separate from the funds generated by the Welsh Government’s grant to the wind farm.
JUN
MAY
Light summer breezes aside, Graig Fatha Wind Farm has continued to deliver in May for members. The turbine generated a total of 331MWh, and members collectively saved 70,000kg of CO₂. That’s the equivalent of over 25,000 hard-working trees, or the same as driving 315 times around the world in an average petrol car! Total member bill savings came in at £10,600.
APR
April has been another windy month for Graig Fatha members. The turbine generated a total of 659MWh, and members collectively saved 139,000kg of CO₂ (that’s the equivalent of over 49,000 trees!) Average member bill savings for the month came in at £23.41. In other news, the Graig Fatha turbine completed its annual maintenance in April, and the comprehensive checks included evaluations of the hydraulic pumps, generator cooling systems, pitch power supplies, drive-boxes, generator temperature sensors, yaw system, top box, lighting batteries, and communication systems, among other components.
FEB
There was cause to celebrate this month, as Graig Fatha Wind Farm reached its two-year switch-on anniversary - with members hitting over £1.2M in energy bill savings. In other news, another great month of Graig Fatha generation! Members now also know their savings rate for the year ahead. See our blog here if you are unsure what the numbers mean.
JAN
Graig Fatha generation continues to be unproblematic with January delivering an average member bill saving of £116. It also saw the second-highest monthly generation since energisation in March 2022, producing 793MWh of green electricity. So far, members have saved more than £1million on their bills, which we think is cause for celebration. Speaking of celebrating, Graig Fatha’s two-year switch on anniversary is just around the corner. Keep your eyes peeled for a bigger update about how much our inaugural renewable energy project has accomplished, so far.
2023
DEC
Everything continues to run smoothly at Graig Fatha. December delivered the highest generation in a single month since it was switched on back on March 2022, with almost 1,000MWh generated. Average member savings in December reached an impressive £146 in the month. This meant many Graig Fatha members have now received an impressive 50% of their initial costs back in the form of bill savings. And there’s a further 23 years of bill reductions to come. A huge milestone, we think you’ll agree?
NOV
Graig Fatha’s November generation performed well with over 691,060 kWh last month! The carbon saved from this is the equivalent of over 50,000 trees and resulted in an average saving per member of £101! We look forward to seeing what the windy months coming mean for members savings over the remaining winter months.
OCT
Graig Fatha generated over 427,000kWh in September, the same power needed for an electric vehicle to travel the circumference of the earth over 50 times! Members’ savings are still strong with an average of over £60 this month. We look forward to seeing what the colder and typically breezier months bring for Graig Fatha’s generation.
SEP
Graig Fatha’s generation for August performed well with a generation of over 430,000kWh. This was a 43% increase from last year’s August generation - the equivalent in extra carbon savings of over 11 return flights from London to Dubai!
NOV & DEC
Further to feedback from some members, we have decided that future bill savings will be applied to members’ accounts after the 5th of each month. This is to make any tax reporting simpler. Some further context for you on the process for your bills savings:
- Typically the savings are applied to members’ accounts very quickly (i.e. within 30 minutes) after we have advised your supplier what those savings should be. However, occasionally this takes a bit longer if key people are on holiday.
- At the end of the month it usually takes a few days for the final metre readings to come through from the ‘data collector’. This is the company authorised to issue metre readings for the purposes of balancing and other functions of the grid. Sometimes we need to do some checks where we think there are discrepancies between the metre readings and what the wind turbine generation data system suggests. This can take a few days and is sometimes impacted by weekends or holidays
JUN & JUL
June was a ‘wind’erful month for wind, with an outstanding generation overtaking May’s with 401,546kWh. Thaxat’s over 85,000kg CO2 saved that month - the same as flying 16 people return to New Zealand! Graig Fatha co-owners received a total of £53,106 savings off their electricity bills. Unlike the severe heat waves which have been seen over the rest of southern Europe, the UK experienced some unseasonably windy weather in July, which was great news for Graig Fatha members.
MAY
May was a big month for Graig Fatha with a whopping £50,783 in total electricity savings, averaging at £56.11 per member! This is the equivalent to planting 29,046 trees and has produced £27,654 for families in fuel poverty in just 31 days, thanks to the Welsh Government’s share of the turbine. At the end of May, Graig Fatha’s total generation reached 6760 MWh, with a cumulative generation above the P90 estimate. For more information of Graig Fatha’s generation and what P50/P75/P90 means, check out our blog post here.
