Major energy providers back people owned power in new partnership

Big news: four UK energy providers are poised to join forces with Ripple Energy to help make clean electricity ownership accessible and affordable to millions more people across the country.

British Gas, Ecotricity, EDF, and E.ON Next will empower their customers by giving them a unique opportunity to come together and own part of a wind farm or solar park in a co-operative managed by Ripple.

By owning their own source of clean power, members of the public can become directly involved in sustainable energy solutions, accelerating our transition to net zero and contributing to the fight against climate change.

Ripple then works with the suppliers to apply savings generated by their customer’s renewable energy sites directly to electricity bills, giving people the  opportunity to power their homes and businesses with 100% green energy and shrink their carbon footprint.

The four new providers are expected to join current Ripple supply partners, Your Co-op Energy (powered by Octopus Energy) and Unify Energy. Ripple partners would then cover 70% of households in Great Britain, allowing savings to be applied directly to most customer’s bills who join Ripple without them having to switch energy supplier.

Founder and CEO of Ripple Energy, Sarah Merrick, said:

“Our mission has always been to make clean energy ownership available to everyone, everywhere. It shouldn’t matter whether you live close to a renewable energy site or not, live in a flat or a bungalow, own your home or rent it.

“Collaborating with even more of the UK’s energy giants will not only support that mission but demonstrate their dedication to sustainability and delivering value to their customers.

“Action to accelerate the UK’s transition to clean energy is more important than ever. Partnerships like these can play a crucial role in making renewable energy accessible to all.”

The four new energy suppliers also voiced their support, highlighting their commitment to renewables and empowering customers to make eco-conscious choices.

Catherine O’Kelly, Managing Director of British Gas Energy said:

“We are delighted to be working with Ripple to increase access to renewable energy ownership for our customers. Not only will our customers save money on their energy bills, they will also cut the carbon footprint of their homes. We’re pleased to open up low carbon solutions to more people and take another step towards our ambition to energise a greener, fairer future.”

Founder of Ecotricity, Dale Vince OBE said:

“At Ecotricity we use the proceeds from our customers’ energy bills to build new sources of green energy like windmills and sunmills - we call it bills into mills.

“This initiative from Ripple gives people the opportunity to own a stake in green energy mills in an accessible way.

“This will give Ecotricity customers the opportunity to play an even bigger part in Britain’s journey to energy independence. We’re looking forward to being part of this cooperative.”

Rich Hughes, Director of Retail at EDF, said:

“We are excited to partner with Ripple Energy, in a further progressive step forward in our ambition to help Britain achieve net zero.

“As a supplier partner with Ripple, EDF customers can now invest in renewable energy projects as part of their own net zero journey and receive the energy the renewable project generates, at a cheaper price.

“At EDF we want to enable our customers to save cash and carbon and this partnership with Ripple, is another great example of how we are helping our customers achieve that.”

Julian Lennertz, Chief Commercial Officer at E.ON Next, said:

“At E.ON Next we know people want to get more from their energy and to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle. Partnering with Ripple gives our customers even more easy ways to play their role in – and benefit from – everything and everyone being powered by sustainable energy.

“Building cleaner sources of energy is in our DNA: we built our first wind farm more than 30 years ago, we were behind the UK’s very first offshore wind farm, and we’re now one of UK’s biggest installers of solar panels, EV chargers and heat pumps, helping our customers to generate their own clean, renewable energy.”

From Friday 26th April 2024, members of the public are able to secure their share of Ripple’s fourth project, a 14 turbine wind farm at Whitelaw Brae in the Scottish Borders. The site will generate enough electricity to power an average home for a year in less than three minutes.
